Exercise in cancer care: the GPs role in supporting people living with and beyond cancer

Exercise is increasingly recognised as an important component of contemporary cancer care. In its 2020 Position Statement on Exercise in Cancer Care, the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) recommended that exercise be embedded as standard practice across the cancer continuum. Exercise has been shown to improve fatigue, physical function, quality of life and psychological wellbeing for many people living with and beyond cancer.

Despite growing evidence and clear recommendations, many GPs remain uncertain about how to discuss exercise with patients affected by cancer, what advice to provide, and when referral to specialised exercise services is appropriate.

This webinar forms part of a broader education program as part of our upcoming hub, GP Cancer Care, supporting GPs to address the long-term physical, psychological and supportive care needs of people affected by cancer. Subsequent sessions will explore related topics including lymphoedema, mental health, and ongoing surveillance needs in general practice.

In this practical webinar, participants will hear from Dr Francis Parnis, a medical oncologist and Professor Prue Cormie, an exercise oncology specialist as they explore the role of exercise before, during and after cancer treatment through three real-world patient scenarios. Together, they will discuss common challenges encountered in general practice, including exercise during chemotherapy, management of treatment-related side effects, and recovery following treatment completion.

Using a case-based approach, the session will focus on:

  • the evidence supporting exercise throughout the cancer journey
  • assessing patient needs, barriers and safety considerations
  • practical exercise recommendations for common clinical scenarios
  • referral pathways to exercise physiology and other supportive care services
  • integrating exercise promotion into routine cancer care and follow-up

Designed specifically for general practice, this webinar will provide practical, evidence-based strategies that can be applied immediately in everyday consultations to support people living with and beyond cancer. It is accredited for 1hr EA.

This webinar is funded by the Australian Government through Lift Cancer Care Services.
