Zero in on Sepsis - Promoting World Sepsis Day

The global burden of disease study (2020) used data from 109 million deaths and 8.6 million hospital records across 195 countries to estimate the burden of sepsis around the world and found the number of sepsis cases and sepsis related deaths was double previous estimates. In Australia there are three times as many cases and almost twice as many Australians dying from sepsis each year than previously thought (Australian Sepsis Network). It is estimated that there are 55,000 sepsis cases in Australia and 8 700 deaths each year. With the greatest impact on infants, the elderly and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Awareness of sepsis remains low with 60% of Australians not knowing about sepsis, and only 14% able to name one symptom.

To improve outcomes related to sespsis a key strategy of the Australian Sepsis Network is to have a coordinated national approach that addresses pre-hospital and in-hospital recognition and treatment. The National Sepsis Program initiative of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare, aims to improve early recognition, treatment, outcomes and post discharge support for people at risk of or diagnosed with sepsis in Australia.

Join us to promote World Sepsis Day as we tackle this National approach to getting the message of sepsis out to all clinicians.  This course focuses on pre-hospital and in-hospital recognition and management of sepsis including post-sepsis syndrome.

This on demand webinar is presented by our panel of experts lead by our Head of Education, Susie Helmrich who is a member of the Global Sepsis Alliance and has been providing sepsis education to clinicians for World Sepsis Day since its commencement in 2012.

All clinicians should attend this session, as we explore different patient case studies to identify key risk factors in different populations, red flags, and sepsis management via the sepsis six.

• Analyse real-world case studies to assess sepsis recognition, diagnosis and management.
• Identify early interventions including appropriate antibiotic use, fluid resuscitation and escalation of care.
• Implement strategies to effectively inform patients, families and other colleagues about sepsis risks, signs and treatment.
