Osteoporosis: a case-based approach to secondary fracture prevention

Course overview

Despite effective treatments being available, fewer than 20% of people who present with a minimal-trauma fracture are investigated or treated to prevent a second one.

A/Prof Christian Girgis, Endocrinologist and clinician researcher is the expert speaker in this webinar. He will take GPs through a practical, case-based approach to secondary fracture prevention – from selecting first-line therapy through to more challenging scenarios, such as identifying patients who would benefit from osteooanabolic therapy and managing patients who experience a fracture whilst on treatment.

What you will learn (course outline)

  • What is new in the latest Therapeutic Guideline updates in Osteoporosis-secondary fracture prevention
  • How to select between the different treatment options using a practical, patient centred approach
  • Recommendations on treatment duration and bisphosphonate drug intermissions
  • Recommendations on monitoring and review, covering DXA BMD frequency, calcium, vitamin D and eGFR monitoring, and the role of bone turnover markers
  • The role of osteoanabolic therapy and when to refer patients for consideration for these treatments
  • How to communicate benefits and risks of treatment, including addressing rare but serious side effects like osteonecrosis of the jaw, atypical femoral fracture and the risk of vertebral fractures after stopping denosumab

Why you should attend

This webinar models practical workflows using case studies, so you leave with actionable tools you can apply in your next consult.

A live, interactive Q&A gives you the chance to put your own questions to an expert.

If you cannot attend live, the session is recorded and available on demand, so you can complete it at a time that suits you.
