When injuries don’t add up: recognising non-accidental injury in children

Why this training matters

Child abuse and neglect remains a heartbreaking reality in Australia — too often, early warning signs are missed. As a healthcare professional, your role is vital. With an estimated 6.1 in every 1,000 experiencing neglect or abuse clinicians are uniquely placed to detect discrepancies, patterns of injury, and behavioural cues that signal risk.

This session is aimed to give you the confidence, language and framework to act early, escalate appropriately and protect vulnerable children.

What you will learn

By the end of this accredited webinar, you will be able to:

  • identify concerning injury patterns that don't match the clinical history
  • recognise red-flag behaviours and high-risk family dynamics
  • differentiate accidental injury from patterns consistent with harm
  • understand state-based mandatory reporting and escalation pathways
  • document clinical concerns safely and ojfectively
  • speak up confidently when something doesn't feel right

Even one missed sign could make a sad situation worse. Being informed saves lives and ensures you’re acting ethically and professionally. You should attend this session if you want to strengthen your understanding of how to identify, assess, and respond to suspected NAI in children and ensure you meet your legal obligations as a healthcare provider.

Presented by a panel of experts, this session focuses on case base examples including coronial investigations. You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge in the interactive poll questions during the live session. Enrol to access the webinar live or on demand.

Testimonials

I feel more confident in making an assessment of an injured child and the decision to get advice from Child Protection regarding making a report if I find any evidence of concern.

I found it beneficial that the presenters were from a range of different backgrounds, such as a doctor, community advocate and RN.

Very useful information for everyone to protect the welfare of children. In particular, State laws are different and everyone is a mandatory reporter in the NT.

Important topic that all staff working with children need to be more aware of.

Presented in a mode that was easy to understand, follow and access as and when required at own pace. Provided by extremely knowledgeable educators with reference and access to current best practice guidelines, polices and procedures.

This was engaging I often wondered what the right way was to report sexual assault or abuse to kids, like yes you have to phone the police and child protection, but you did not know what happen next now I do I have found this very insightful.

This is a Medcast Continuing Medical Education (CME) course.
