Initiating oral anticoagulants for patients with atrial fibrillation

This interactive webinar explores the use of direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for stroke prevention in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Through practical case studies, we will explore how to initiate, dose, and review DOAC therapy in general practice, with a focus on shared decision making and safety.

Building on cases introduced in our previous AF webinar, this session dives deeper into:

  • when and how to start a DOAC according to stroke risk assessment scores

  • when a DOAC may not be suitable

  • adjusting doses for comorbid conditions

  • strategies to reduce bleeding risk

  • the role of ongoing monitoring and follow up

We will also cover clinical decision tools, modifiable risk factors, and supporting patient adherence over time.

Presented by experienced educators and supported by evidence-based guidance, this webinar is ideal for health professionals involved in long-term care of patients with AF. This session includes RACGP and ACRRM CPD hours and offers a chance to apply learning to real-world general practice scenarios.
