Milo, aged 26, comes to see you with lateral knee pain. He’s fit and active and has been running for a few years. He wants to ramp things up and train for a triathlon in 3 months time at the full Olympic distance.

Every time he attempts over 10km he gets really bad right lateral knee pain. Following this he rests for 3 days but it keeps coming back. 

Milo has Iliotibial Band Syndrome, one of the most common causes of lateral knee pain - up to 14% of runners will have ITB syndrome. How do GPs diagnose this and help patients?
