Androgen abuse in males: the physiological harms

The true extent of androgen abuse is unknown, but it’s estimated that lifetime use in the general population is probably one to five per cent globally, with prevalence at least 50 times higher in men than women. Two per cent of Australian secondary school students report using performance and image-enhancing drugs (including androgens). 
 
GPs and other health professionals are important in identifying and supporting patients who use anabolic steroids and other performance and image-enhancing drugs (PIEDs). In this webinar we provide up-to-date, evidence-based information on the physiological harms associated with the use of these substances and the physiological factors to consider for patients who are looking to cease use.
 
The development of a trusting clinician-patient relationship can facilitate discontinuation and will often involve a supportive team of clinicians with general practice, nursing, allied health, endocrine and psychological expertise.
