Course Overview
A healthy 22-year-old presented to his GP with what appeared to be a simple viral illness. Six days later, he died from fulminant meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia.
This powerful, case-based webinar examines the coronial investigation into a death to explore one of the greatest challenges in clinical practice—recognising invasive meningococcal disease before it becomes obvious. Through progressive case disclosure, participants will follow a person clinical journey from his initial presentation through to his rapid deterioration, examining the clinical reasoning, diagnostic uncertainty and decision-making at each stage.
This session combines expert clinical education with commentary from Meningitis Australia on current epidemiology, immunisation and prevention to provide you with practical strategies to improve early recognition, safety-netting and patient education in everyday practice.
What You Will Learn / Course Outline
Why You Should Attend
Invasive meningococcal disease remains one of the most rapidly progressive bacterial infections encountered in clinical practice. Early symptoms frequently resemble a viral illness, making diagnosis challenging even for experienced clinicians. The difference between timely recognition and delayed presentation can be measured in hours. This webinar provides a unique opportunity to learn from a real coronial investigation in a supportive, non-judgemental environment. Rather than focusing on hindsight, the session explores how clinicians can recognise evolving red flags, manage diagnostic uncertainty and strengthen safety-netting to improve patient outcomes. Combined with expert updates on meningococcal vaccination and prevention, this webinar offers practical, immediately applicable learning for everyday clinical practice.
