Beyond the test: supporting patients with inherited cancer risk

This interactive eLearning module has been developed to support general practitioners in identifying, assessing and managing inherited cancer risk within routine clinical practice. Inherited cancer syndromes account for 5 – 10% cancers and they carry significant implications for patients and their families. With the continued increase in uptake of genetic testing, GPs are often the first point of contact, placing them in a critical position to recognise patterns in family history, initiate appropriate referrals, and provide ongoing care.  

There is a growing need for practical education in cancer genetics in general practice, as many clinicians report limited confidence in recognising red flags, interpreting family histories, and navigating referral pathways. At the same time, advances in genetic testing and increasing patient awareness are leading to more frequent presentations involving questions about inherited risk. This creates a need for accessible, clinically relevant education that translates directly into everyday practice.  

Using a case-based approach centred on a patient scenario, this module guides learners through key steps including risk identification, use of clinical tools such as eviQ, and appropriate referral to genetics services. It also provides clear explanations of genetic testing pathways and what patients can expect from specialist care, helping GPs support patients beyond the initial test result.  

Importantly, the module emphasises the broader role of the GP in providing holistic, patient-centred ongoing care. This includes recognising and addressing the psychosocial impact of inherited cancer risk, navigating cultural considerations, supporting family communication, and identifying practical challenges such as accessing care around fertility, physical impacts of surgeries and mental wellbeing. The activity equips GPs with the knowledge and confidence to provide comprehensive, ongoing support for patients and families affected by inherited cancer risk.
