Course overview
Recent guideline updates in cardiometabolic medicine and emerging outcome data have challenged long-standing prescribing practices and introduced new opportunities for personalised, risk-based care. This session is designed to translate these evolving evidence-based updates into practical clinical frameworks for the busy general practitioner, supporting safer prescribing and improved long-term cardiovascular and metabolic outcomes.
Course outline
Led by Dr Neal Tucker and Dr Simon Morgan, this webinar will cover updated Australian clinical guidance on the role of long-term beta-blockers in the secondary prevention of ischaemic heart disease, including identifying patients in whom ongoing therapy may no longer be required. It will compare the evidence for long-term clopidogrel versus aspirin monotherapy following myocardial infarction and discuss how to individualise antiplatelet choice in routine practice.
The session will also outline a personalised, comorbidity-based approach to Type 2 diabetes management, with particular focus on early-onset disease and strategies to reduce long-term cardiovascular and renal risk. It will provide practical guidance on integrating GLP-1-based therapies into cardiometabolic care and consider the long-term benefits and adverse effects such as gastrointestinal intolerance, pancreatitis risk, sarcopenia, rare ocular complications, and management of weight regain following treatment cessation.
Participants can engage in real-time, case-based polling and interactive Q&A to contextualise learning to common primary care scenarios, and accumulate RACGP CPD points across multiple categories by participating in the webinar as well as our associated mini audit on Post AMI management.
This webinar is being formally accredited with RACGP and ACRRM.
