Managing subfertility in general practice: an evidence based, stepwise approach

This interactive, case-based eLearning activity supports general practitioners to confidently assess and manage subfertility in primary care using an evidence-based, stepwise approach.

The course uses three progressive clinical case scenarios to guide learning from early presentations through to referral and fertility care pathways. Participants will review normal fertility and time to pregnancy, apply age-based thresholds for assessment, and develop practical skills in counselling couples about timing, lifestyle factors and realistic expectations. The module emphasises investigation restraint and high value testing, with a focus on avoiding low value or anxiety-provoking investigations.

The course also provides a clear overview of referral criteria and the Australian fertility care pathway, enabling GPs to counsel patients effectively and support coordinated care with fertility specialists.

Learning is delivered through interactive MCQs, short reflective activities, and targeted feedback to reinforce clinical reasoning and decision making. Optional expert video excerpts are included to model patient centred communication and explain key concepts, alongside concise written summaries for flexible learning.

By completing this activity, participants will improve their confidence in managing subfertility presentations, reduce unnecessary investigations, and provide clear, compassionate, and evidence-based fertility care in general practice.

Designed to be practical and relevant, completion of this module allows participants will be able to attain 30min EA + 30min RP for completion of this module.

Participants can gain the full suite of CPD by enrolling in our webinar Subfertility in primary care – a guide to assessment and management (30min EA + 30 min RP) or our mini audit Clinical assessment of female subfertility in general practice: mini audit (1hr EA + 2hr MO).
