Lunch and Learn: clinical debriefing

This lunch and learn session will follow clinical case studies to explore how to apply structured debriefing techniques to enhance patient safety, identify systems issues, and foster psychological safety and team learning.

What you'll learn:
  • How to use the STOP debrief tool to structure a clinical debrief immediately following an event
  • When, where and how to initiate a debrief in a variety of clinical contexts including cardiac arrest events, trauma/perioperative emergencies and deteriorating patients
  • The difference between operational, educational, and psychological debriefs
  • Strategies to create a safe, non-judgemental environment that promotes team reflection and improves future clinical performance
  • How debriefing supports emotional wellbeing, interprofessional collaboration, and clinical governance

Why this matters:

Clinical debriefing is a key skill that supports patient-centred care, team effectiveness, and resilience in healthcare. When done well, it turns challenging clinical moments into opportunities for shared learning, service improvement and emotional support.

Whether you're a nurse or team leader working the ward, perioperative, ED, ICU or a paramedic on the road or in the air, this lunch and learn session will help you embed debriefing into your routine clinical practice - so every team member has a voice, and every event leads to progress.
