Medcast, in partnership with Dementia Training Australia, are presenting a three hour program for general practice nurses and other nurses who would like to learn more about dementia.
The population of people aged 65 years and over is increasing worldwide, and with this the prevalence of dementia. Dementia is now the leading cause of disability in Australia and the leading cause of death for women. Team-based primary care can improve health and social outcomes and reduce hospital admissions for people living with dementia and their carer(s).
Caroline Gibson and Professor Dimity Pond will present an interactive session including case studies and group activity. The sessions will cover the role of primary care and the primary care nurse in dementia care, dementia signs, symptoms and diagnosis, impact of dementia on the person, family and community, brain health promotion, recognising cognitive change, assessing cognition and impact on function, communication skills and adapting care in context of cognitive impairment.
Nurses are uniquely placed to notice changes that may indicate dementia. In this webinar interact with the experts who will share their insights to empower you to act early and make a difference for patients presenting for care. Learn how to recognise early signs of cognitive decline during your day to day interactions and be part of the solution to improve dementia care.
This is a two part series that brings you a person centred approach to dementia focusing on the important role of the nurse particularly within the general practice setting.

"Excellent, engaging, current and practical theory and practice care provided in this session."
"Very well delivered, engaging and informative. Easy to understand and excellent slides to go with the presentation. I like that it was simple to understand, not complicated and wordy explanations that need to be filtered through to grasp the true meaning of what is being conveyed."
"I have increased awareness regarding dementia, and will look at patients in a less fearful way now that I have improved understanding of this condition."
"I really liked how the presenters promoted the relationship between the GP and the primary care nurse. This relationship is so important and not always well utilised."
"I can completely relate to this topic and the presenter. As a district nurse myself working with dementia patients in the community, I found the concepts interesting and relevant."
This is a Medcast Continuing Medical Education (CME) course.
